5:26pm, Wed: updated version Selangor chief police officer (CPO) Nik Ismail Nik Yusof today said he has lodged a police report against malaysiakini and two opposition parties for claiming that the death toll of the communal clashes in Petaling Selatan area was higher than the figure given by the police.

According to the national news agency Bernama, Nik Ismail told a news conference that malaysiakini, PAS and Keadilan “must prove their claim”.

He was quoted as saying that Keadilan and PAS had been distributing pamphlets at Kampung Taman Medan off Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuala Lumpur, disputing the death toll figure given by police, which is six dead.

The two parties have denied distributing any pamphlets in the troubled areas.

He said that rumours such as these created an atmosphere of fear among the people and hampered police efforts to maintain public order.

Nik Ismail also confirmed that 25 people were still warded at the University Hospital and the death toll from the clashes remained at six.

Sedition

According the New Straits Times online, a police report was lodged at the Selangor police headquarters in Shah Alam today, and investigations classified under the Sedition Act.

It said that those expected to be interviewed by the police are Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the party's deputy president Dr Chandra Muzaffar, party supreme council member N Gopalakrishnan and PRM president Dr Syed Husin Ali.

Besides the four, police are also expected to interview Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan.

Leaders of the four-party Barisan Alternatif, in a statement on Monday, had said that based on family and hospital sources, "we fear that the actual number of deaths is greater than the official figure announced by police."

This was subsequently reported by malaysiakini (Dr M rapped over Kg Medan clashes, March 12).

But foreign wire AFP reported that Nik Ismail said the claims were "an effort to scare people and to give wrong information."
