a) Update on 8th Aug Arrests
Below are the confirmed names of people arrested during the 8th Aug
assembly.

Total of people arrested = 8 person

(group 1)
1) Chua Tian Chang @ Tian Chua
2) Abdul Malek Hussein

(group 2)
3) Norsuria b. Ismail
4) Monas Suffian Putra b. Zulkarnain
5) Sabran b. Hamzah
6) Mohd. Jasni Zakaria
7) Nekmat b. Abu
8) Zainal Abidin Hashim

All the arrested people was released today (9th Aug 2000).

Group 1 (Tian Chua & Abdul Malek Hussein) was released early this morning
from IPK, Kuala Lumpur (Police Contingent Headquarters of Kuala Lumpur). No
charges were brought against them.

# Group 2 (the remaining 6 persons) was released today at around 11:00 am
from Stadium Police Station on police bail. They will be charged in court
this Friday for illegal assembly.

b) Torture in Custody

Two men were reportedly tortured while in custody; Tian Chua and Sabran
Hamzah.

Tian Chua was tortured during his detention at IPK yesterday.Tian Chuan was
kicked on his back several times by police officers, one of them reportedly
wore a mask. Upon his release, Tian Chua had lodged a police report this
morning.

To date, no information has been obtained on the assault of Sabran Hamzah.


C) Update on 4th Aug Arrest

On 5th Aug 2000, 6 persons arrested on the 4th Aug 2000 assembly
(Friday)were released on police bail. They were required to report back to
Stadium Police Station on 18 Sept 2000, to see if charges will be brought
against them.

One man, Lokman Adam (youth leader of the National Justice Party [KeADILan]
was also released on police bail at the same time but was immediately
rearrested by the police, in connection with a protest held in National
Mosque on March 2000. The gathering at the National Mosque had protested
against the restrictions and harrassment on a popular newspaper, 'Harakah'
which publishes pro-reform articles and news on Anwar Ibrahim.

Lokman was detained at the Stadium Police Station. He was brought to the
majistrates court on 7th Aug 2000 and was remanded further for another 3
days for police investigation.

Today, 8th Aug 2000, Lokman was brought back to the majistrate court and
charged for illegal assembly and 'harrassing' the police during the
pro-'Harakah' gathering held in March 2000 at the National Mosque.
