11 October 2000

Dear friends,

Invitation to "People Before Profits 2000" and appeal for donation

SOS-Selangor, Pusat Komas, Amnesty International Malaysia and SUARAM will be co-organizing a national conference titled, "People Before Profits: Development for Communities" in October 2000. This Conference will be held on 4-5 November 2000, at Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, which will gather participants and observers from various groups and communities affected by the many insensible and insensitive "development" projects in Malaysia.

The objectives of the Conference are as follows:
1. To provide the public with basic information on the impact of development on communities and environment
2. To provide a venue for activist groups to share experiences of their struggles
3. To put forward an alternative sustainable development plan for the nation
4. To explore strategies for national networking and solidarity
5. To create a national platform against unsustainable and destructive development.

We are inviting your organization to participate this important meeting of the communities who will come from different part of the country, including Sabah and Sarawak. The meeting provides a rare opportunity for the participants to have an overview of the sort of development that is happening in our country and how the people and communities suffered under these trends of development. The conference aims to address all these important issues. The communities are here to explore consensus, cooperation and mutual support among each other.

Lastly, we appeal to you to support this important meeting and the struggle of the communities by giving donation to the conference. Your contribution would be much appreciated as we have limited fund to support more participants from the communities to the conference. No amount is too small.

Looking forward for your positive reply.

Yours sincerely,

Yap Swee Seng
Coordinator for People Before Profits 2000
