BE RESPONSIBLE AND COMPASSIONATE

It is regrettable that despite the grave and tragic situation in Kampung Medan, Barisan Nasional leaders are still practising shallow politics to further their own political agenda. Responsible and sensitive leaders should know that this is not the time for opportunism and rhetoric.

In particular, it was most unbecoming of the Works Minister S. Samy Vellu, in this time of grief and sorrow, to misrepresent the Barisan Alternatif’s sincere efforts to ameliorate the difficult situation in Kampung Medan.

Contrary to what was reported in the Malaysiakini article “More Houses for Kampung Medan” dated 14 March 2001, BA leaders were the first to visit the area, even at the risk of their own safety.

Dr. Syed Husin Ali, President of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) first visited Kampung Medan on Friday, 9 March, after he heard reports of violent clashes in the area. Dr. Syed, being concerned about the tense situation there, took the initiative to drive around the area to meet and speak to local residents.

Further, other BA leaders such as Dr. Xavier (Keadilan) and Mr. Sivarasa Rasiah (PRM) also visited the area on subsequent days. Genuine efforts were undertaken to meet local leaders to ensure that peace and reason prevailed in Kampung Medan. Indeed, Sivarasa met briefly with local police to discuss the situation there.

In addition, on Tuesday, 13 March, top BA leaders including Dr. Wan Azizah, Dr. Syed Husin Ali, Mr. Lim Kit Siang and Ustz. Nasharuddin Mat Isa visited the area in an effort to bring the community together and preserve the peace.

Barisan Alternatif Selangor is genuinely concerned about the unfortunate and sad situation in Kampung Medan. Indeed, all BA efforts have been carefully measured to ensure that the interests of the local community are promoted and protected; thus advocating peace, understanding and reconciliation.

Accordingly, Barisan Alternatif Selangor hopes that all concerned parties will approach this sad and shameful episode in a sensitive and sensible manner. More than that, we urge that compassion and respect be shown to the local community which has suffered a great deal.
